On May 13, 1882 J. I. Lamprecht started The National Oil Company, which later became The National Refining Company. This company initially started as a distributor of oil products. Offices and works started at 225 Canal, Cleveland. This small company would develop into the largest independant oil and refining company of it's time.

Trademark #103,441 was in use since November 1, 1882. Was displayed on cans, barrels, and other packages containing lubricating-oil, gasolene and axle-grease.
